He doesn’t make beats. He doesn’t sing. He only raps occasionally. So what exactly does DJ Khaled do that has allowed him to sell over twelve million singles so far? We decided to pull together every time Khaled opens his mouth on Kiss The Ring, just to see how many of his first-week sales can be attributed to his own talent.

He doesn’t make beats. He doesn’t sing. He only raps occasionally. So what exactly does DJ Khaled do that has allowed him to sell over twelve million singles so far?

In his own words (from “Bitches & Bottles”): “I make hits. I find hits. And I put hits out.”

He finds hits? As in, he finds them laying around? He adopts orphaned hits?

That explanation is a little vague, but it’s certainly not invalid. His last six albums have charted in the top three on the US Rap charts, with his last two hitting number one. Kiss The Ring has a slew of guest features, from the likes of Lil Wayne, T.I., Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, and many more. Could it be that the studio was too crowded for Khaled to have a chance to shine on his own record?

It’s not like he’s living up to his name (ahem, DJ), and pulling long hours working on beats in the studio; according to the liner notes for Kiss The Ring, Khaled co-produced just three of the album’s twelve tracks.

Kiss The Ring has some incredible songs on it (“Take It To The Head,” “Hip-Hop”), but does DJ Khaled have anything to do with that? Almost every time Khaled opens his mouth, he’s saying his own name, someone else’s name, his label name (“We The Best!”), or someone else’s label name. He’s sold over twelve million singles by being the ultimate hype man.

We decided to pull together every time Khaled opens his mouth on the album, just to see how many of the projected 40,000 first-week sales can be attributed to his own talent.

– In 12 songs, DJ Khaled says “We The Best” 5 times.
– In the first 11 songs, Khaled’s words amount to about one minute and 15 seconds (168 words)
– The final song (“Outro” (They Don’t Want War) feat. Ace Hood)” is the only song on the album where DJ Khaled spits a proper verse, and its length alone is longer than his contributions on all other songs combined.
– We were able to reduce over 48 minutes of music into less than 3 minutes of Khaled.

And if you’re interested in following along with our supercut, we’ve got Khaled’s lyric book below. WE THE BEST.

Outro (They Don’t Want War) feat. Ace Hood

Heard them people seeking problems with the Godfather
Shockers keep them llama get your head trauma
Pussy boys rather see me dead, mama
Instead I’m in that Maybach texting William Roberts
Riding through the city with my hammer close
Pray to Allah that this trick does not have bash results
Self made all it took was faith and lots of hope
Understand this the realest shit I ever wrote
Arab from the middle east Jerusalem
Duplicate me will never be I’m hot as Lucifer
Palestine mastermind, rowie face, bezels shine
Smoking good, counting paper, tryin’ to dodge the Babylon
Yeah, I’m well respected and that’s on any block
Talk about the gutter you just pray to make it out
Puffing ganja with them wassels with them dreadlocks
Cracking lots with them mobsters get your dog shot
I’m fucking molding, foreign without an owner
Motherfucking neighbours bought the whole corner
Bought the whole block, stuntin’ on you fuck boys
We the best of all, gotta get that young boy
Gotta let me get ’em
Nah Ace, they don’t want war
Just let me get ’em
Nah Ace, they don’t want war
I got ’em, I got ’em
Nah Ace, they don’t want war
Cause that’s that shit we came for

I always told my dogs everyone got a choice
Everyone, kiss the ring
