PH BALANCE is a column that gives Pop Hunter and AUX contributors a chance to weigh-in on the latest pop music videos. This time, we riff on a two-for-one video: “I Wish You Would” / “Cold” by Kanye West and DJ Khaled.

Jeremy Mersereau, Pop Hunter contributor:

Ah, the World Star Hip Hop logo; always a mark of quality. Oh my god, I think I’m gonna hurl. This is worse than watching Cloverfield in theatres. Still, good on Hype Williams for sticking with his longtime DP Cameron “Steady Cam” Korman, the only cinematographer in the biz with severe Parkinsons. Oh, and for everyone keeping score: the total number of words Khaled says in his song is 13, most of which are the names of other people. And Hit-Boy produced it? What do you even do, Khaled? Hey Yeezy, if you’re dropping 6k on footwear how come you can’t find the funds to rent a different set for your video?

Chayne Japal, Pop Hunter and AUX contributor:

Kanye West is not hard. That’s part of the reason he’s been able to stand out through his career. While most other popular rappers were holding onto the gangsta personas that brought success to the genre in the early ’90s, Kanye was a (extremely talented) regular guy, and we embraced him for that. I understand reinvention, diversity, relevance, etc., but this approach isn’t his strong point. I don’t see why he feels the need to do this when there are at least 30 other artists out there that are better than him at it. It might work for him and his fans for now but this weaksauce won’t be as influential and as timeless as what we got from him before. Simply, I want the old Kanye back.

Nicole Villeneuve, Managing Editor of AUX:

These dual Kanye-featuring DJ Khaled tracks get a rather sparse little Hype Williams clip, with Khaled, Yeezy, and Rick Ross hanging out in a tunnel Ninja Turtles-style, cast in plenty of stark, flashing lights. That’s really about it. Ye’s sounded better. And hey is that Kim Kardashian?

Crystal Sales, Editor of Bite.ca, Pop Hunter contributor:

Has there been an explanation for Yeezy’s obsession with seizure inducing videos? It was really hard for me to actually watch what was happening without feeling very nauseous. I did however catch that Rick Ross used to take buses and now he has a Lotus. I may not be a car expert but that proportion (Ross/Lotus) don’t seem to add up.

Midway through the video I thought about counting the amount of times the “N” word was used, but it meant I’d have to go back and listen to the song from the beginning. In summation: they use that word a lot.

Aaron Zorgel, Associate Editor of Pop Hunter:

My gut instinct (pun very intended) was to make a predictable fat joke about Rick Ross, but then I realized that DJ Khaled is just as fat, and might even be fatter than Rozay. So, here are two fat jokes. You can call me cruel, but you can’t call me biased.

1) Not to take anything away from Hype Williams’ visual effects team, but the “earthquake” effect we’re seeing throughout the video is definitely just the accidental side-effect of Rick Ross doing jumping jacks beside the camera. Wait, Rick Ross, doing jumping jacks? That can’t be right, otherwise we’d be able to hear the clatter of his breasts. He must have been chasing the hot dog vendor in the tunnel that day.

2) We call him DJ Khaled, but he certainly doesn’t do anything to deserve that title. The only logical way to proceed is to think of really mean things that DJ could stand for.

– DJ “Distended Jowls” Khaled
– DJ “Deepfried Jello” Khaled
– DJ “Doesn’t Jog” Khaled
– DJ “Diabetes Justice” Khaled
– DJ “Deceptive Jelly-belly” Khaled

Okay, now I feel bad. But it had to be done.

Dave Hodgson, Pop Hunter contributor:

Guys, you’ve got the money. Invest in a Steadicam! This music video looks like most of the ones I made in grade ten Comm. Tech. class, except that their cameraman is even shakier than Rod, the 23-year-old who was repeating his OAC year for the fourth time just so he could sell pot in the smoking area.

I’m a recovering motion sickness pill head – just got my four year chip – and this double vid was almost enough to put me back on the pink pony. Thanks, a-holes.
