Two weeks after previous judges Jennifer "J-Lo" Lopez and Steven "Scare-Cro" Tyler announced that they wouldn't be returning to American Idol, FOX dropped a whopper and announced that Mariah Carey will be filling one of their seats for the show's landmark 12th season. Two weeks after previous judges Jennifer “J-Lo” Lopez and Steven “Scare-Cro” Tyler announced that they wouldn’t be returning to American Idol, FOX dropped a whopper and announced that Mariah Carey will be filling one of their seats for the show’s landmark 12th season. But the real stunner is what she’ll make. Carey will reel in 18 million dollars for the year, which works out to roughly $200,000 for every time she politely coos, “I just thought that was amazing.”

The 18 million dollar salary makes her the highest paid judge in reality TV history, and is more than all but one player in the National Football League earns, with no chance of her season ending when he’s concussed by a blindside tackle. Well, little chance. It’s also six million more than Lopez received last year, so you have to wonder if J-Lo is kicking herself with those shapely, Venus-shaven legs.

Idol is still in search of one more judge, and one petition-cum-Facebook group for “Weird” Al Yankovic to join the show has racked up over 7,000 Likes. But given Yankovic’s noted distaste for reality programming, it’s, at best, unlikely and, at worst, a really really stupid idea. Though it would be highly amusing to see him trying to convince some young hopeful to sing a Barry White song as “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Sub, Babe.” “C’mon! Food is funny!”
