After performing to a sold out crowd at the Mermaid Ball in her hometown of New York City, Azealia Banks has made a conscious attempt to distance herself from the rap world. Azealia took to her Tumblr page, and announced that she’d rather be referred to as a “vocalist” instead of a “rapper,” because paying attention to urban media was getting her in "trouble." Based on this, and the recent Nicki Minaj vs. Hot 97 controversy, the media isn’t taking it easy on female rappers these days.

After performing to a sold out crowd at the Mermaid Ball in her hometown of New York City, Azealia Banks has made a conscious attempt to distance herself from the rap world.

Azealia took to her Tumblr page, and announced that she’d rather be referred to as a “vocalist” instead of a “rapper,” because paying attention to urban media was getting her in “trouble.” Check out her full statement below:

“NO LONGER WISHING TO BE A RAPPER. i never was…. and as soon as i started paying attention to bullshit urban media, i started getting myself in trouble. From now on i’m a vocalist, and will not be associating myself with the “rap game”… or whatever the fuck that means…
no more twitter for me… it makes me entirely too accessible.
Catch me on tumblr… it’ll be more interesting.”

It’s unclear whether or not this will change the direction of Azealia Banks’ sound, or if she’s just nitpicking over semantics. It’s also unclear what “trouble” Azealia is referring to, but it could be a reference to her ongoing feud with T.I. and Iggy Azalea.

Based on this, and the recent Nicki Minaj vs. Hot 97 controversy, the media isn’t taking it easy on female rappers these days.
