The long-ongoing piracy case between the RIAA and Limewire reached a milestone this week, when the RIAA named its damages at 72 TRILLION DOLLARS. That’s more than the music industry has ever, ever made, and more even than the entire world’s GDP (which is about $60 trillion).

Over 11,000 songs have been cited by the RIAA in the case as “infringed” material, with each song being downloaded thousands of times, requiring, as far as the RIAA is concerned, compensation for each individual download.

Judge Wood, who is presiding over the case, called the figure “absurd” and said a “single statutory damage award from Defendants per work infringed” is a more reasonable idea. [via NME]

UPDATE, 1:00 p.m.: As reader Quentin Burgess points out, the NME is reporting information that is over a year old. The RIAA and Limewire reached a settlement in May of last year. BUT STILL.
