In a report released today, it is said that the closure of popular peer-to-peer network Limewire reduced music piracy by seven percent. Was Limewire really that powerful? As far as we can tell it hasn’t been 2001 for quite some time, but what do we know.

In a measure from the fourth quarter of 2007 to the fourth quarter of 2010, following Limewire’s closure in October, consumer and retail information surveyors NDP group report a drop of twelve million P2P users. The company says Limewire’s use rose as it neared its end. The findings are based on online surveys of U.S. consumers age 13 and up and were conducted in January 2011. The final numbers are based on 5,549 completed surveys.
