If you watch 30 Rock, you might remember when in its third season, Jenna Maroney is cast as Janet Jopler, a fascimile of Janis Joplin created since the studio couldn’t obtain the rights. An obvious exaggeration on reality, sure, but that could be the case for that long rumoured Jimi Hendrix biopic we told you about earlier this week.

The Andre 3000 starring All By My Side was supposed to finally start shooting next month after what’s felt like an eternity of speculation, but the Wall Street Journal reports now that Hendrix’s estate is against the film. As far as we can tell, plans to begin filming are still in motion, but Janie Hendrix, Jimi’s sister and the current CEO of Experience Hendrix, said that while she’s not against making a biopic about her brother, “producing partners would, out of necessity, have to involve the company from the inception of any such film project if it is to include original Jimi Hendrix music or compositions.”

If Hendrix’s estate doesn’t change their tune before the film’s release, it could mean many things—rewrites, lawsuits and, most devastatingly, a lack of Jimi Hendrix-penned music. Janet Jopler? More like Jason Hendry.
