After a bit of a hiatus, Sigur Rós has finally, formally announced Valtari, the upcoming album we’d heard a bit about late last year.

You might remember that Wall Street Journal writer Jim Fusilli described an early recording of a new song as being filled with “rich choral voices and what sounded like a pipe organ,” but the band’s taken a more…abstract interpretation of the upcoming album.

Jónsi tells Q magazine (scans via Victory Rose) that Valtari sounds “like an avalanche in slow motion,” while bassist Georg Holm confirms that the title translates to Steamroller. “Yes, that big wheel you use to flatten tarmac,” he says.

The follow-up to 2008’s Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, Valtari is due out on May 28th. Check below for its full track list.

01. Ég Anda
02. Ekki Múkk
03. Varúð
04. Rembihnútur
05. Dauðalogn
06. Varðeldur
07. Valtari

UPDATED: A new song off the album as well as it’s album art have just popped up online. Listen to “Ekki Múkk” below and check out Valtari‘s cover at the top of the post. [via Minneapolis Fucking Rocks]
