Who: Careers In Science
From: Toronto, ON

As we said over here, Careers In Science are one of your best punk bets at CMW this week. Here, singer Dave Proctor tells us why, as well as gives us a few details on the band’s upcoming full-length, Foreverwolf. Check out their EP, Whateverwolf, below, Proctor’s answers to our interrogative CMW questionnaire.

AUX: Say you’re playing host to an out-of-city band in T.O. for a day. Where do you take them?

Singer Dave Proctor: We’d probably start the day bringing them to Eric [Bourque, drummer]’s house where they’d have to record backup vocals for our album—we’ve been doing that a lot lately. Then we’d take them to Brigadoon, this dirty dive bar near where we practice. It’s terrible. They’d love it. Try the chicken wings. Actually don’t.

Is there anything you’re looking forward to seeing or adamant about avoiding at CMW?

Looking forward to seeing Single Mothers play the same show as us, plus Kevin McPhee; he’s so hot right now. We also heard that that mime from Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels is doing a keynote. It’s sounds awesome. We might miss it.

What’s the best and worst thing about a festival like CMW? Does it compare to others you’ve played or attended?

We love that all these amazing bands are coming to Toronto, but it’s unfortunate that we mostly all have to work throughout the festival. It feels like every other festival we have to play—we end up working our crappy jobs.

What’s your favourite Toronto band, and why?

Toss up between Buddy Black and Corgasm. Corgasm have the most amazing stage show we’ve ever seen, and Buddy Black are about as nerdy and fun to hangout with as you could ever hope for. We also love the Barenaked Ladies.

Tell us why your show is the show everyone should make sure to see.

We’re giving away free copies of our CD, Whateverwolf, for people that don’t have it already, so that’s awesome [ed note: worth it! It rules]. Also, have you seen our lineup? It is actually the loudest bill in the festival. We love all of these bands.

What else is Careers In Science up to that we should know about?

As I write this, we’re listening to almost-final mixes of our full-length, Foreverwolf, hopefully to be out before summer. We’re taking our time because it is exactly the record we want to make. We’ve got an acoustic set April 19 at The Press Club [in Toronto]. We’re also planning a summer tour with Buddy Black down to the ‘States. We’ve also talked about starting to kick beach balls off the stage at live shows to the tune of “Playing With The Boys” by Kenny Loggins. So that’ll be fun.

Careers in Science play the Bovine Sex Club tonight at 9pm.
