The idea behind sending out review copies is to get press for your album before it hits stores, but Spiritualized’s Jason Pierce had a different idea. He’d send the band’s new album out when the label wanted it, but it wasn’t going to be the finished product. So while buzz builds for Sweet Heart Sweet Light, Pierce admits that he’s actually not done work on the album, which is expected to be pushed back a few weeks from its original March 19th release date.

“I had the rather foolish idea last November that I could deliver the record that’s been sent out and keep working on the real version,” said Pierce in an interview with Spin. “I’d meet the delivery date they need for reviews and things like that and nobody would be any the wiser that I’d be carrying on with the mixing.”

Pierce goes onto say that the album’s final version will be very different from what’s currently making the rounds, explaining that “[s]ome bits are more realized and closer” to what he wanted the album to sound like.

As for whether he’s worried about early reviews for the album misrepresenting it, Pierce jokes that “sometimes it’s like they’ve got a different album anyway.”
