UK electro veterans Underworld have been named the musical directors of the opening ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

They’ll be working alongside a long-time collaborator, director Danny Boyle, who is the artistic director of the ceremonies and whom the duo have worked with as far back as their name-reviving soundtrack days on the director’s hit film, Trainspotting.

Boyle said having the duo on board was like the “final piece of the jigsaw,” while Underworld, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde, say they’re taking the honour very seriously. “It’s certainly not something we’ll get the chance to do again.”

Late last month, it was revealed that Elbow would be providing the theme song for the games as well. The Olympics kick off July 27. [via BBC News]
