UPDATE: Guided By Voices say they have not broken up, and have cancelled upcoming appearances due to personal reasons. [via Robert Pollard]

Am I the only one who’s all “oh whatever, Guided By Voices,” about this, while simultaneously being like “thank you, GBV!” because by breaking up this time and cancelling all upcoming appearances, including their ATP spot in May, they’ve made room for the Afghan Whigs to reunite? Probably not! We’re probably all thinking that!

Rather unceremoniously, the reunited classic Guided By Voices line-up—who were set to release a new album on New Year’s Day, so who knows what’s up with that—have called things off, meaning that the All Tomorrow’s Parties’ I’ll Be Your Mirror festival at Alexandra Palace in London May 25-27 will now feature the Afghan Whigs. Frontman Greg Dulli will also co-curate ATP’s I’ll Be Your Mirror festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey, taking place September 21-23. The Whigs will headline September 22.

We’re all for a Whigs reunion, but what kind of 90s indie rock trickery is this, anyway? [via Pitchfork]
