On November 22, Minneapolis-based hip-hop collective Doomtree will release their third full-length record, No Kings. Most recently all up in your news feed with the production of Wugazi, the mash-up brainchild of Doomtree’s Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy, the collective’s first joint release came with 2007’s False Hopes. Since then, they’ve released a self-titled full-length and collaborated on a million different tiny projects.

Producer Lazerbeak has provided beats for not only the majority of Doomtree’s material, but the solo albums of crew MCs like P.O.S. and Sims. A high school friend of P.O.S., Lazerbeak was also a founding member of Frenchkiss Records indie rock act, the Plastic Constellations. Known at the time as Aaron Mader, the transition from jangly guitars to building hip-hop beats with an MPC2000XL has left a genre-blurring mark on the music of Doomtree.

The playlist he constructed, designed to capture a selection of tunes enjoyed by the entire crew, speaks to the breadth of Doomtree’s vision and taste. And reinforces the indisputable fact that “Midnight City” by M83 might be the best song released this year.
