As much as we ragged on him yesterday for his contributions to a new Sony commercial, we’re as stoked as anyone with the news that Leonard Cohen’s first new album in 7 years is officially on its way. Expected out sometime next year, Old Ideas is said to feature ten tracks, all of which are previously unheard or unpublished. Cohen confirmed the news in Spain, where he had travelled to collect the Principe de Asturias Prize for literature, an award given in Spain authors who don’t write in the country’s native tongue.

“I’ve played it for a few people, and they seem to like it,” said Cohen to local journalists.

News about Cohen’s next album started popping up earlier this month when his son Adam told BBC News that he’d been working with his pops in a consulting capacity, saying  “I’m very happy to listen to what’s being created and be asked for my opinions.”

The 77 year old Canadian iconic released his last album of original material, Dear Heather,  in 2004 [via the Guardian]
