SappyFest took place this past weekend in the cutest town in Canada: Sackville, New Brunswick. The festival is a small one, now in its sixth year, where the boundaries between artist and audience truly blur. You might find yourself sitting next to Julie Doiron and her family watching a stellar performance by Jim Bryson in an old theatre, or learning a thing or two about freestyle Frisbee tricks from Chad VanGaalen, or shooting a quick game of 3 on 3 basketball with some of the members of Arcade Fire (they’re really tall and you don’t stand a chance). Oh right, Arcade Fire… they showed up on Friday night and played a blistering 45 minute surprise set under the pseudonym “Shark Attack.” It was cool. We felt special.

Besides casual sports encounters with indie rock dudes, more SappyFest magic is delivered in the form of “City Mail,” also known as Sappy Mail. According to the SappyFest Six program: “City Mail is a project dedicated to the free delivery of inner-city postables, investigating and expressing the personal and physical geographies that make up a place.” The off-kilter mail system makes you feel like you’re in the fifth grade again because you can send notes throughout the festival that are then hand delivered by the gracious City Mail carriers to your best buds and to the cute girl you have a crush on. Also, you could send notes to the (cute) bands. So we sent mini-questionnaires out via City Mail to the bands and artists of Sappy. Here are some of the best responses, including one from “Shark Attack”:
