Mastodon’s new album is proving to be a little left of centre, even for the already proggy sludge rockers. First they unveiled the cover for their new album, The Hunter, and we all laughed. Then we saw the tracklist, which features songs named “Octopus Has No Friends,” “Blasteroid” and “Bedazzled Fingernails” among others, namely “Curl of the Burl,” which surfaced online late yesterday evening.

There’s a bunch of talk about whether or not the song was officially leaked or not—it popped up on YouTube, quickly got cease and desisted before reappearing on Twitter and Tumblr, where it’s since remained—but the lesson here isn’t whether or not it’s a legit leak or not. No, the lesson here is that Mastodon wrote a song called “Curl of the Burl” that, if we’re hearing correctly, starts with the line “I killed a man because he killed my goat, I put my hands around his throat.”

Oh, and it’s an awesome track. Groovy and to the point, not like the first song they released off The Hunter, “Black Tongue,” which was featured in a pretty cool video showing how the cover was made.

Click HERE to watch the “Black Tongue” video. Listen to “Curl of the Burl” below. The Hunter is due out September 27th.

UPDATE: Well, the Soundcloud disappeared right around the time the song was officially put out on Spotify and iTunes. You can still check it out below, though:
