Lou Reed thrives on the unconventional, which might explain why he apparently just finished recording an album with Metallica. No, seriously.

Metallica says the collaboration started back in 2009 when they joined up with Reed for a passable performance of “Sweet Jane” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary party. Recorded over the last few months at Metallica’s Bay Area studio, the unnamed project—Loutallica, maybe—doesn’t have a release date yet, but we speculate that you’ll get to hear the ten songs they recorded sometime in the fall.

For Reed, the self-proclaimed inventor of heavy metal, the collaboration probably made sense. For Metallica, it’ll probably make dollars. Maybe Reed can surge some life into the flailing, one time top of their game metal band, but if anything, we can at least take solace in knowing it can’t possibly be as bad as Metal Machine Music or St. Anger. It can’t, right? [via Metal Sucks]
