Few vocalists are as well suited as Toronto’s Katie Stelmanis to tackle the work of Joni MItchell, and the proof is in Austra‘s cover of “Woodstock,” one of Mitchell’s best-known songs. You can listen to the cover below.
Serving as the B-side to Austra’s new single “Lose It,” the electro-gothic trio’s take on the piano ballad is sped up a bit, and, of course, doused in sparse synths. Stelmanis’ operatic training comes in handy here, sounding especially haunting in the layered harmonies of the classic line, “we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.”
Austra released their debut album Feel It Break this week, a new project that is, as Stelmanis told AUX, just as much a natural progression of her solo work. They’ve been hyped for months and are sure to get a new flux of interest as the official Jay-Z Fan-run Facebook (over 8 million fans!) and Twitter (over 300,000 followers!) plugged the band today.
