Hey have you heard about the new Foo Fighters record? It’s not like we ever talk about it around here so thought maybe you didn’t know. Anyway, this new Foo Fighters record, Wasting Light, is out today!

Because we have never ever talked about it before, here’s the quick version: Dave Grohl wanted to do an old-school analog (see: no computers) album so the band set up in his regular ol’ home garage in Los Angeles with a reel-to-reel machine and recorded everything live off the floor. They did it with Butch Vig, who of course worked with Grohl twenty years ago on Nirvana’s Nevermind. Grohl also re-recruited former Foos guitarist Pat Smear, and ex-Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic. Plus Husker Du’s Bob Mould. Then they decided to release a documentary about it. And do a tour where they played in people’s garages.

Right. So then today we learn that inside the booklet of the albums, the band has included a little piece of the master tape of the album’s original recordings. They decided to cut up the original reels and send em’ out.

Whether or not you’re ready and willing to accept Foo Fighters into your life as more than a generally better-than-average staple radio rock band, you’ve got to admit: they’ve gone about the creation and marketing of this album in some really interesting ways. You can read the full exclusive interview the band did with LA Weekly about the snippets of tape here.

The band will also be performing tonight on Live with Letterman; at 9 p.m., you can stream the live 90-minute concert on VEVO.com. [via Exclaim!]
