This year, FADER’s annual “Icon” issue focuses on Notorious B.I.G., and to gain some insight into one of the 20th century’s most complex characters, they spoke to Diddy, who opened up about Biggie in an interview available next month.

In a preview on Vulture, the artist-formerly-known-as Puff Daddy describes the “gentleman”-like qualities of the deceased rapper, who he says was a “charmer” with the ladies thanks to his humour and chivalrous opening line: “Pleased to meet you.”

Diddy also shares his most vivid Biggie memory in which he saw the superstar “alone in a room by himself, rocking back and forth . . . for hours in deep thought while writing” and embodying total “deep, spiritual rap meditation.” And while the rapper was prided on his apparent worldliness, his friend remains baffled as to the inspiration behind his rhymes:

I don’t know where he got that stuff from… I don’t really understand how he knew all that stuff. I never saw him reading a lot of magazines, reading a lot of books, watching a lot of TV, watching a lot of movies. I think he was just put on the earth this way.

The “Icon” issue hits newsstands May 3.
