WIND Best Conversation Ever: Iggy Pop
by AUX staff
February 18, 2011
Can you believe it’s been only four-ish week since we began listing the celebrities we know/love in hopes of acquiring some quality face time? (Yes – you probably can.) But we can’t. Hence, it only makes sense that in the spirit of WIND’s Best Conversation Ever contest, that we rummage through the bank ‘o idols to determine who would constitute as one half of the next perfect conversation. But don’t worry – no celebrity “it” bands this time around. No, mid-February calls for shirtlessness and leather pants.
But before we begin our tangent on who we’d like to talk to, it’s only fair that we tell you to follow Win With WIND on Twitter and Facebook so you actually have a shot at winning weekly prizes in addition to “the big one.” But that’s all – the rest is your call. (And we kind of want to win, too.)
This time, our Best Conversation Ever is (hopefully) with a man whose legacy withstands the test of time – and the adventures of heroin. He birthed punk rock, he taught countless bands a thing or two about performing (and surviving), and he still manages to draw crowds of thousands during, say, giant festivals that feature a free show at a certain Yonge and Dundas Square. (That everyone, ever should’ve gone to.)
Yes, we’re talking about Iggy Pop. And instead of waxing poetic about what he’s done, we’re going to be completely selfish and simply list the reasons why we want to talk to him.
1) It’s Iggy Pop. He’d show up wearing leather trousers, no shirt and no shoes, and he’d still be more intimidating than any artist in the history of artists. He’d be lucky to get a shy giggle from us – we’d be too preoccupied with wanting to bask in the glow of a legend. We might be able to utter “nice hair”. Might. And for that, we salute him.
2) Remember the time he rolled around in glass and nearly died about 259258 times? We’d like to talk about those. ALL of those.
3) We could duet “Gimme Danger”. And by “duet”, we mean “kind of mumble our part as we intermittently chime in, “Iggy . . . Pop”. (Totally creepy – but whatever. He’s seen worse.)
4) There would be a 20-minute conversation all about London. And then another one about New York. And when we say “conversation”, we mean “tell us where to go because some of us don’t really know our way around”. (“And also tell us more about the New York Dolls.)
5) Bragging rights. WE GOT TO TALK TO IGGY POP AND YOU DIDN’T. (Sorry, that sounds terrible. But we’d Tweet about it at least once just to remind everyone about how awesome it was. We’re not assholes – seriously. 140 will do.)
So that’s that on that. Really, the reasons are endless because when you reach Iggy Pop standards, you can basically ramble on about everything you could possibly say to someone that was once synonymous with “how is he still living?” Now we know – he’s made of phoenix tears and unicorn strength. And punk rock.
Now if only he could spread some of that to us.
And so we ask again: who’s your Iggy Pop? Enter now!
