Every week, High Fives asks five bands fives questions over five days. This week, we’re putting a cap on the New Year by talking trends for 2011.

Richard Terfry is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting because of Talk Show Night at Juicebox Manor, the strange little show we made for a season for AUX. We took Mr. Terfry, a lifelong baseball aficionado, to a suburban batting cage, filmed an interview in front of it, and turned around when we were finished to see that it had clearly closed mid-conversation. So we drove even deeper into the suburbs, found another batting cage that was still open, and proceeded to enjoy Rich’s incredible command of classic batting stances throughout history. The whole experience exemplified what has made Terfry a compelling storyteller, writer, rapper, musician, and, most recently, radio host, for the last 20 odd years, capable of breaking down his wide variety of influences and interests into fascinating, digestible chunks of information, be it through a song, or on a long-ass car ride into the heart of Mississauga. This week, Terfry released his latest album as Buck 65, a collection of digital EPs and 7″ released over the last year (plus two new songs) called 20 Odd Years. Featuring contributions and collaborations with artists ranging from Gord Downie to Nicholas Thorburn, 20 Odd Years represents another achievement in the wicked and weird journey of Buck 65.

Are there any trends from 2010 you already see dying in 2011?

It seems to me that there’s a quicker turn-over rate in trends these days than ever. Most only seem to last a couple of weeks. I hate to say it, but I think it’s over for Antoine Dodson already. Oh yeah – and this slutwave thing…

What do you expect to be the biggest flash-in-the-pan musical trend of 2011?

It seems that the pieces are all in place for there to be a big dubstep crossover this year. I think it might take over pop music for a little while. But I suspect it will go underground again pretty quickly and will probably be better for it.

If you could become the legendary creator of new musical genre this year, what would it be?

How about post-Miami-bass?

Are there any records you’re particularly excited about this year?

I’m looking forward to the new Cadence Weapon album coming out. What I heard in the studio sounded pretty amazing and fresh.

Are there any records you’re just fucking dreading this year?

I don’t hate Lady Gaga, but I kinda hate the way people talk about her as if she’s one of the most important/brilliant artists of all-time or some shit. And I’m dreading the next wave of that, which I think is coming soon.
