What some might not know (or care, as the case may be) about Twilight star Robert Pattinson is that one of his heroes is late singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley, and that Pattinson is actually an accomplished songwriter. He even contributed a few songs to the recent Twilight soundtracks.

A source revealed to the Daily Express that Pattinson has become “obsessed” with the possibility of a biopic about Buckley and “is doing everything he can to land the part. He has already told his business team that this is his passion and they agree it could be the film that makes him a legitimate Oscar contender.”

Oscar talk might seem a bit premature based on what we’ve seen the actor in so far, but the deceased singer’s mother Mary Guibert said, “Robert is a fine young actor. I’m flattered he’s been linked to this project. When the time comes, we’ll give everybody an opportunity to be seen and heard.”

Film producer Michelle Sy is reportedly behind the project and has met with Pattinson. “The actor must be able to play music and sing, or at least make it believable that he can do that,” Sy said. “Until we start auditions, there’s no way we know who’s best for the part.”

Jared Leto, James Franco and James Marsden are also rumored to be on the hunt for the role.
