Greetings from Tim Buckley is the first of two upcoming Jeff Buckley biopics to get a trailer, and we should warn you that its basically the entire movie shrunk down to three minutes and 29 seconds.

Because it’s not officially endorsed by Buckley’s estate, Greetings from Tim Buckley isn’t allowed to use any of Jeff’s songs. But that isn’t important, since it tells the story of how his career really got started after he was convinced to play a tribute show to his estranged father, Tim Buckley, who was a hugely successful singer in his own right.

But like Stereogum points out, the film is rumoured to end after the concert takes place, which is exactly how the trailer goes. Penn Badgley, however, has been getting solid reviews for his portrayal of the Grace singer, and the movie itself is getting positive reactions out of the Toronto International Film Festival, meaning it might be worth watching even if you know the ending…SPOILER ALERT he plays the concert, duh.

Like his father, who died from a heroin overdose when he was 28, Jeff Buckley died unexpectedly at age 30 after he drowned while working on the follow up to the critically acclaimed Grace. And while this movie seems like it won’t tounch on any of Jeff’s own original material, it seems like surprisingly good background for whenever the family endorsed biopic comes out. As for Greetings from Tim Buckley, it’s currently in post-production while running through the festival circuit. There’s no official release date set just yet, but expecting it out in early 2013 might be a safe bet.
