The Icelandic legend known as Bjork took on Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” at a karaoke rally in Reykjavik on January 6, an event held to collect signatures for a petition against Magma Energy’s proposed energy takeover.

While her choice in song may have been surprising, her appearance surely wasn’t, as the artist and her contemporaries issued a press release ahead of the three-day event that seemed nothing less than magical. Literally:

“Elves, hidden people, sports people, hobby musicians and professionals . . . everyone who cares for Iceland, come and join forces and perform a powerful ode to the nature of Iceland . . . Let’s bring our natural resources back to us with song.”

On top of her tribute to Ian Curtis, Bjork also sang a duet with politician and environmentalist Omar Ragnarsson, thus working to remind everyone that no matter how hard we try, we’ll never be as good at karaoke as professional musicians, or as mystical as Bjork herself. [via TwentyFourBit]
