It has been noted that past British Prime Ministers have always name dropped a few rock musicians or bands in hopes of tapping into youth culture or to just sound cool.

Gordon Brown said he liked Arctic Monkeys, Tony Blair said he liked Oasis and now current leader David Cameron has become outspoken about his love for The Smiths, however former guitarist Johnny Marr has protested and forbidden the Prime Minister from liking them.

“David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don’t,” Marr recently wrote on his Twitter page. “I forbid you to like it.”

Four years ago Cameron picked the band’s track “This Charming Man” when he was a castaway on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. Marr unfortunately didn’t elaborate on his comment, but it seems the former Manchester band have always been opposed to the Conservatives in power. Morrissey’s song “Margaret on the Guillotine” from his debut solo album imagined the execution of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. [Guardian]
