Winners announced for 2010 Western Canadian Music Awards

Polaris Prize shortlister Dan Mangan picked up three awards last night at the 2010 Western Canadian Music Awards held in Kelowna, British Columbia. Mangan’s latest record Nice, Nice, Very Nice won Best Independent Album of the Year and Roots Solo Recording of the Year. The BC native also got the nod for Songwriter of the Year.

According to the Vancouver Sun, Mangan texted his acceptance speech from New York City saying, “Wouldn’t you know it? I’ve been to the WCMAs the last four years, been nominated and almost won, and the year I win I’m not there. It’s as ironic as a black fly in your chardonnay!”

The recently renamed You Say Party won Rock Recording of the Year for their third LP XXXX while Grand Analog’s Metropolis Is Burning picked up Rap/Hip-Hop Recording of the Year. International achievement awards were handed to out Sarah McLachlan, Tegan and Sara and Chilliwack were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The Western Canadian Music Industry Awards were handed out a day before with BC’s Mint Records winning Independent Record Label of the Year. Bruce Allen won Manager of the Year and Ryan Dahle was named both engineer and producer of the year.
