Since early this year, reports have come in that Islands frontman Nick Thorburn and Man Man’s Ryan Kattner, aka Honus Honus, have been working together on a side project whenever they have time apart from their respected bands. AUX sat down with Kattner and got the latest scoop on this collaboration.

“We’re gonna record this winter and it’ll come out next year,” Kattner said. “And then we’re gonna try to start playing some shows. Basically whenever we can fit time in our schedules.”

Thorburn and Kattner have enlisted Modest Mouse member and Toronto native Joe Plummer to play drums for the as-yet-untitled project that has signed with a record label, but hasn’t announce it yet.

“Joe showed up and we had three days of practice and on the forth day we just set up a couple microphones in a basement and demoed an entire album in one day,” Kattner said. “I don’t think I’ve ever done that. We put together the demos and now we’re going to record it proper.”

It seems this side project has given the Man Man bandmember several firsts, including working with another vocalist. “It’s the first time I’ve ever collaborated with another lyricist and so it’s been fun,” he said. “Writing with Nick, we each tired to shove off responsibility to the other person. At the time he was living in New York and I was in Philly working on the Man Man record so I would go up for the weekend and we’d just play around.”

“I just thought our voices would compliment each other in a very strange way kind of like male/female,” he added. “It’s been fun not having to sing lead on every song and being able to push that on someone else.”
