AUX Weekly sat down to chat with Harry Angus from The Cat Empire as they third day of the Calgary Folk Festival got started. Angus, whose band is on their month long North American tour told AUX that one of his favourite things about playing festivals like CFMF are the jam sessions and workshops. Later Angus would jam with Finly Quaye and the Isreali six piece ‘Coolooloosh’. But by far the best jam session of the festival thus far goes to St. Vincent, Sunparlour Players, Library Voices and Timber Timbre. Their tribal percussion and haunting guitar had the familiar feeling of Broken Social Scene.

Vincent’s vocals alongside Taylor Kirk’s (Timber Timbre) signature ghostly guitar riffs gave the CFMF audience a set they will most likely never see again. Sunparlour’s Andrew Penner led a jam that he requested be more on the experimental side, asking his fellow musicians if they could just start playing and go with it. Later it was Annie Clark’s (Vincent) turn to lead the jam and she promptly ended the cacophony with a more organized arrangement. Clark is clearly a fan of this type of environment as she’s previously lended her talents to Beck’s Record Club and is currently at work with David Bryne on a new album.
