Not holding back on the hits, Iggy and the Stooges busted out hit after hit including "Search and Destroy", "Raw Power", "Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog". The band's sound was electrifying, powerful and the sheer rock reverberated throughout the entire Square and beyond as people around the corner could hear the frantic noise.

To one side of me, a dolled-up twenty-something year old girl in a black and white polka dot halter dress, poised for a 50s pinup ad gyrating and shaking along to every song. To the other side, a constant current of folks filtering in and out of Yonge-Dundas Square, ranging from leather clad punks screaming for joy to regular joes looking confused and rather annoyed. Almost every structure within distance that resembled a ladder or rock climbing wall became one as avid fans trying to catch a glimpse of Iggy and the Stooges took in the show on top of subway and mall entrances, miscellanous structures within the Square and god knows what else.

Shutting down Yonge Street, thousands upon thousands of people swarmed Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday night for quite possibly the biggest show to ever take place there. Finding friends became an impossible Where’s Waldo feat, accessing bathrooms were out of the question and depending on your height you may not have even seen the iconic band (this is how they look like – note: link to photo of the band).

Those who harp on old rockers losing their energy and vigour clearly haven’t seen Iggy perform. His energy onstage is infectious and incredible to see. “I want to get everyone on stage!! But I can’t so I’ll get everyone’s energy,” he said, and it’s clear that there was a sense of enthusiasm and love returned back and forth all night between the fans and The Stooges.

As I left, sweaty fans laid down in the middle of the blocked-off streets in shock and amazement. This was definitely a memorable show for Toronto and it’s hard to see how NXNE will top this next year.
