The upcoming soundtrack for the new Twilight movie Eclipse, the final film in the trilogy, has an impressive roster. The Dead Weather, Muse, Florence and the Machine, Band of Horses, The Black Keys, Beck, Vampire Weekend and Metric, who have written one of the theme songs in collaboration with composer Howard Shore, are all included.

Now I’ve not seen any of the movies nor read a single sentence of any Twilight novel, but have heard that the Vampires in these books/movies are a little different from what people have seen in the past. Night stalkers thirsty for blood and stopping at nothing to feed have been replaced by sensitive, kind and caring individuals posing with ashen makeup (See Craig Ferguson’s opinion below). Some may think the impressive array of musical talent that’s on these soundtracks, which in the past has also included Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear, St. Vincent and Bon Iver, is a way to make the film seem ‘cool’ or ‘hip’ and acceptable to the shrinking mass known as indie culture.

In an interview with NME, music supervisors Paul Katz and Alexandra Patsavas say the reasons for choosing these artists is the complete opposite. “We have forward-thinking directors and they have a progressive music taste,” Patsavas said. “It’s completely natural…It’s about the best piece of music for the scene, but we do like the role of introducing new acts.”

Apparently the upcoming film in the trilogy will be full of fight scenes “so there should be some conflict in the music, so we have a band like The Dead Weather there.” The soundtrack will be released on June 8.
