“The program this evening has been an interesting combination of great music and nonsense,” David Letterman said after viewing The Hold Steady’s performance of “The Weekenders” on the Late Show with David Letterman this past Friday. He casually looked at bandleader/sidekick Paul Shaffer when saying the latter half of that sentence. The track is from the band’s fifth studio album released this week called Heaven Is Whenever. The singles “Hurricane J” and “Rock Problems” have already been released in anticipation of the album.

The performance itself is by the book. Singer/guitarist Craig Finn is spot on with the vocals and can’t keep himself from smiling. It’s always nice to see a band doing what they love and not afraid of showing it like these guys. They’ll be touring all spring and summer in both North America and Europe and will play a show at the Kool Haus in Toronto on July 16.
