Colin Medley spends Friday in Austin shooting a music video for Toronto's Mantler at the University of Texas campus and checks out The Drums playing the NME party.

Friday at SXSW wasn’t full of music, though good times were still had. I started the day off with brunch at Star Seeds, a restaurant just a few doors down from where I’m staying. One thing I’ve noticed about American restaurants is that the portions are huge. For the same amount of money that I’m used to paying in Canada, I’ll get twice as much food. No complaints here, just something I noticed. What did I order you ask? Biscuits, covered in a mound of egg and sausage, with grave poured on top. It was gross, but really tasty.

My afternoon plans involved me shooting a music video with Mantler around Austin. We visited the campus of the University of Texas, as well as the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, which had a talking animatronic LBJ in full cowboy regalia. I was pretty exhausted by the time we wrapped up shooting, so I did the same thing I did last year on Friday night: headed to Esther’s Follies for some comedy! I saw a whole whack of comedians, including Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal, and Todd Barry. At around 1 o’clock I decided to see if I could get into the NME party at Latitude 30, but once I got there there was quite a lineup outside. Luckily, through the window I could clearly see and hear The Drums playing, and after a few minutes the crowd dispersed and I was easily able to make it inside too fully appreciate their catchy summer jams. I can’t believe that band is from Brooklyn, they just sound and look so damn British.

Alright, that’s all I have time to write now, but that’s all I did yesterday so it works out perfectly.
