Kanye West’s new song, “Only One,” seemed to come out of nowhere, giving us our first autotuned, piano-driven taste of a post-Yeezus Yeezy. It’s a sparse yet groovy crooner carried by a guest spot by none other than Sir Paul McCartney.

Maybe you’ve heard of him. These fans haven’t, though.

Almost immediately after the song’s surprise release, fans took to Twitter to both praise Kanye West for helping McCartney’s career out and to ask, “but seriously, who is this guy?”

And so on and so forth.

Some were joking:

Some were not.

We think he was in Wings, or something?

A press release later confirmed that the song is part of the long-rumoured collaboration between Yeezus and Macca, and that “Only One” is largely the result of McCartney and West improvising together. As for its lyrics, West says the song is from the perspective of his dead mother singing to him from the afterlife.

As he puts it, “my mom was singing to me, and through me to my daughter.”
