We get it: #Fuck2016. But let's stumble into the new year with a smile on our faces, eh?
It’s almost become a cliche at this point, but that doesn’t make it any less true: 2016 was not a good year. There were mass shootings, deadly hurricanes, war and humanitarian crises. Evil clowns played on our most Freudian, deeply-buried fears. We lost David Bowie, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, George Michael, Gene Wilder, Alan Rickman, Leonard Cohen, Prince and Harambe. A fascist demagogue adored by neo-nazis took over the American government and is in the process of turning Western civilization into a nightmarish, The Road-esque dystopian hell-toilet. Vine was shut down.
But come on now, buck up, gang! In times like these, we can always rely on the magical, transformative power of music to remind us that there is beauty in the world, even when things look bleak. Or in the case of 2016, horrifyingly, apocalyptically egregious to the point where you’re constantly telling your family you love them because you legitimately aren’t sure how this is all going to turn out. What were we saying again? Who cares. Here are some happy songs.
The Beach Boys – Wouldn’t It Be Nice Pharell Williams – Happy Bobby McFerrin – Don’t Worry Be Happy The Tragically Hip – Courage Bob Marley – Don’t Worry About A Thing Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling U2 – Beautiful Day REM – Shiny Happy People Queen – You’re My Best Friend Bryan Adams – Can’t Stop This Thing We Started The Turtles – So Happy Together Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like YouSee, don’t you feel better? No? Well, if those didn’t cheer you up, here’s a video of a pig waking up from a nap to eat a cookie. See you in 2017 (we hope).
