The world needs System of a Down now more than ever.

It’s a good thing that the world doesn’t have a finite number of emoticons, because if it did that little open mouthed, wide-eyed yellow faced dude would have long been exhausted by 90s alt-metalheads hearing the news that a new System of A Down album is on the horizon. Believe it or not, it’s been eleven years since the release of Hypnotize, and fans may have begun to think that the group’s activity would be restricted to their occasional run of reunion shows. With that in mind, their booking of 2017 live dates was no big deal – but the fact that the band has posted footage of them jamming with no dates booked for half a year has gotten the ‘Oh snap they’re writing again’ rumour mill going. Bless his hard hitting Armenian heart, drummer John Dolmayan has confirmed that they are, and that new material could drop as early as next year.

“I want everyone on board and feeling good about it, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now. There’s a tremendous amount of pressure on us, though, because it’s been 11 years – at least 12 by the time it comes out. Our playing ability is better than it ever has been and we’re trying new things. We’re not trying to make ‘Toxicity’ Part II, just because it was by far our biggest album. This needs to be something for a new generation of SOAD fans, so everyone can see we’re not resting on our laurels.”

Interestingly, frontman Serj Tankian, who’s been absent from the jam sessions, took an infinitely more cautious stance in an LA Weekly interview, saying that the band had all been writing music separately and were “going to get together and see if that’s going to be System music or not.”

Hey Serj – quit being a party pooper. How about this – every one of us fans will attend a performance of one of your symphonies before the end of next year if you give us some sweet, sweet System. Deal?
