Barry Obama is working with South by South West on a 1 day festival at the White House.

If there was going to be a music fest taking place at the White House, who would be the best, acts to book? The Hard Working Americans? China Crisis? Of course, there’s always the nuclear option. Well, this thought exercise is about to become reality: there’s going to be an SXSW-affiliated, one-day festival on White House lawn next month.

Dubbed South by South Lawn, the mini-festival will take place on October 3rd, and will feature performances, talks, and films as per the usual South By ethos. According to the official White House statement announcing the event, SXSL “will bring together creators, innovators, and organizers who work day in and day out to improve the lives of their fellow Americans and people around the world.”

The White House is currently accepting nominations about who should be granted the special privilege of attending the event over at its web page. Sorry, only people who have “created change in their community” are eligible to attend the festival. CUT TO: Henry Kissinger setting up a custom script to nominate himself 40,000 times. “Ach, I simply must see Chance The Rapper again. After all, I certainly created a great deal of change in the Cambodian community”.

Barack and Michelle Obama both spoke at the main SXSW fest back in March. Obama’s talk focused on technology’s ever-increasing role in peoples’ level of civic engagement, a topic that must have been music to the ears of the legions of absurdly affluent technopreneurs that are now SXSW’s core audience. Who knows what exciting proposals for future amalgamations of the private tech sector and government will be unveiled at SXSL? Maybe if you’ve made a change in your community you can find out.
