"I thought he was black. And what about Zimbabwe, huh?"

Old media czar and sentient Philadelphia accent Chris Matthews + the Republican National Convention = a recipe for awkward, graceless interviews if there ever was one. Still, I don’t think anyone could have predicted things would get this insane:

Yep, you heard that right. Speaking on Iowan Congressman Steve King’s recent controversial comments about the ‘contributions’ of nonwhite civilizations (spoiler: King thinks there aren’t any, a position so historically blinkered & laughable it might as well have come out of the pages of a phrenology textbook), Matthews brings up Beethoven for some reason. “I thought he was black,” he clarifies, provided you use the broadest possible definition of “clarifies”.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, Matthews might’ve been clumsily mocking bizarre internet conspiracy theories that claim Beethoven’s true ancestry has been intentionally obfuscated… which is still uh, perhaps not the best thing to bring up in an ostensibly serious interview.

Matthews also thinks Bill Cosby is dead, and not just career-wise, as this insanely awkward RNC interview with SNL Weekend Update Colin Jost and Michael Che proves:

Damn, these cringey interview clips make even Kalisto’s look good by comparison. Someone please take Matthews out to pasture and replace him with literally anyone, even the stuttering luchador, already.
