Vampire Weekend declined a spot on the Shrek soundtrack after Weezer's bus crash.

BREAKING: Our planet’s Shrekologists have been left reeling after a stunning Shrek-based revelation from Vampire Weekend frontman Erza Koenig. (SHREK THE HALLS FOR THIS PRESENT, ETC.)

It’s a tale of lies, injuries, Monkees covers, and Weezer-based misfortune dished out in 140 character-or-less chunklets. Koenig (in response to @YungConstanza, no less!) shared that the band had the opportunity to sub in for Rivers Cuomo & Co. as the providers of “I’m A Believer” for the Shrek Forever After soundtrack.

The potential fill-in scenario came about because a bus accident sidelined Weezer and it looked like they might be a no go to perform. Koenig says he didn’t want to step in while Weezer was on the mend and he has a blank Shrekless sheet in his discography for it.

If this all sounds a bit bizarre, that’s because it is. Koenig insists that it’s a true story, expresses some longing to join the Shrekosphere someday and quotes Joe Walsh. Seeing as Rostam Batmanglij has exited Vampire Weekend, maybe the band will ease into their new era with a Shrek soundtrack tribute album. “Accidentally In Love” won’t cover itself, y’know.
