It's called 'Hypocritical Bullshit Performed Through Gritted Teeth: Authenticity Discourses In Nickelback's Album Reviews In Finnish Media.'

Nickelback and ephemeral pop-culture studies of dubious validity: two poor, empty-calorie offerings that taste shitty together, again.

This time, a cultural studies PhD student from the University of Eastern Finland named Salli Anttonen has analyzed Finnish reviews of Nickelback’s music between 2000-2014, and published her results in the Metal Music Studies journal.

The paper makes the novel case that people started hating Nickelback more vociferously the more popular the Albertan quartet became, and is titled “Hypocritical Bullshit Performed Through Gritted Teeth: Authenticity Discourses In Nickelback’s Album Reviews In Finnish Media”. Now that’s what I call padding! Someone’s definitely going far in academia.

“It became a phenomenon where the journalists were using the same [reasons] to bash them, and almost making an art out of ridiculing them,” Anttonen said, also noting that hating on Nickelback is all about music critics maintaining their positions of authority by criticizing anything with too much mass appeal. “By nullifying Nickelback’s authenticity, critics are actually authenticating themselves,” she writes in the paper. If you can get a PhD with entry-level insights like these, sign me the fuck up. I shoulda titled this article “The Hegemonic Colonization and Fetishization of the Discourses Surrounding The Spectacle of Pop-Culture Inquiries”.

Anttonen concludes that Kroeger and Co. can’t get a break no matter what they do: “Nickelback is too much of everything to be enough of something. They follow genre expectations too well, which is seen as empty imitation, but also not well enough, which is read as commercial tactics and as a lack of a stable and sincere identity.” Kind of like…something, I just can’t think of what.

Anyway, read the paper here if you’re so inclined, for only $18.00.

Oh well, at least it’s another opportunity to link this, which is always a plus:
