See some photos of the Sex Pistols' punk pad looking a wee bit different now.

Think gentrification in Toronto is crazy? Well, it would seem we can’t hold a candle to our former overlords across the pond.

In 1978, Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten (a.k.a. John Lydon) purchased a property in the Gunter Grove area of Chelsea. While the five-story Victorian house wouldn’t qualify as ‘modest’ in anyone’s books (well, maybe 50 Cent‘s), its location in the decidedly artsy and bohemian area of London a stone’s throw away from the birthplace of punk certainly didn’t put it as a desirable luxury property either.

Plus, there were the regular decadent parties with characters such as Sid Vicious and Lydon’s choice of decor, which largely consisted of nicotine stained walls, beer cans, and a futon.

Now, that same area is part of one of London’s most coveted postal codes – and the current owner has updated the property to fit the bill. Oh, and the bill in question? For the converted apartment consisting of the first three floors – yep, not even the whole building – you’ll be shelling out a cool £5,612 per month (that’s $10,390 Canadian). Like you’ll no doubt have guessed, the place looks a wee bit different now. (Click through the gallery above to see the differences.)

Quaint, innit? And here’s how realtors describe the one-time lodgings of a man that rallied for “Anarchy in the U.K.” and once called the host of an early evening TV program a ‘fucking rotter:’

“The property on Gunter Grove will have broad appeal, and will probably attract a group of young professionals looking for a cool statement pad, or single occupier in search of a apartment perfect for entertaining, with space for a study and a spare room.”

I mean, you can’t make this shit up. Personally, all I can picture is a British gentleman with a monocle espousing the delicious history of his new rental property to a stiff upper lip type woman draped in pearls:

Gentleman: “…yes, and wouldn’t you know, the building once belonged to a ‘musician’ (haughty air-quotes here) of some sort named Jonathan Rotten, of all things.”
Fancy Lady: (Aghast with had to her chest) “Oh dear…. did they ever get the smell out??”

Ever seen Lydon’s terrible and short-lived Jackass- style reality show Rotten TV? It was cancelled for good reason, but I would absolutely support a one-episode return if it consisted of him showing up at the Gunter Grove property and just trashing the place.
