Halifax’s OBEY Convention has always aimed for maximum inclusivity with unconventional venues (churches, parks, barbershops, gay bars, and libraries) and truly wide-ranging line-ups of artists. For its ninth year, the festival is going even further in those efforts by offering free admission to anyone under the age of 19.
From May 26-29, the self-described “festival of free ideas” will not charge underage fans for entry to all unlicensed events. So far OBEY has announced an initial line-up featuring underground rapper Mykki Blanco, avant-jazz group Zs, minimal wave/techno head Marie Davidson, metal droners Nadja, and Toronto art-punks New Fries.
OBEY Convention IX will also include artist talks, installations, and a multi-city collaboration with Weird Canada’s national drone day. Early bird festival passes at a reduced cost are available in limited quantities now through Ticket Halifax.
