Mudvayne's Ryan Martinie probably has to wear a shirt now.

Alright, kids – who remembers Mudvayne/discovered the band through their older brother’s CD collection? For those who may be unaware, they were a pretty extreme (for the time) and surprisingly successful metal band that fused elements of jazz, progressive rock, death metal and hard rock. If you’re wondering what the hell that would sound like, the answer is something like this:

Obviously, their appearance became a big part of their identity; that and touring with Slipknot resulted in the band being perceived as a ‘baby version’ of the masked group from Iowa. This perception may have overshadowed the group’s insane musicality to most casual listeners – which could explain the surprise expressed by many at bassist Ryan Martinie’s new project.

While singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett went on to form the surprisingly uninspired Hellyeah with Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, Martinie (arguably the band’s biggest talent) mostly kept a low profile.

However, MetalSucks recently discovered that the bassist is back – in a jazz/funk/prog trio of all things. While his playing always inferred this type of stuff was both in his realm of competency and interest, it’s understandably hard for people to marry the concept of Ryan Martinie the jazz bassist to this guy:

The name of his new band is Soften The Glare, and they’re pretty amazing. Check out the video below. Martinie’s a lot less scary looking these days, but is still absolutely terrifying on bass.
