"Like all athletes, there comes a time to take yourself out of the game."

The latest issue of Drumhead Magazine features an interview with Rush’s Neil Peart where he references his daughter in relation to his status as “a retired drummer”:

“Lately Olivia has been introducing me to new friends at school as ‘My dad–He’s a retired drummer.’ True to say–funny to hear. And it does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to take yourself out of the game. I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It’ (‘Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it’).”

The 63-year-old Peart first joined the Canadian prog rockers in 1974, two weeks before their first U.S. tour. With any hope, these quotes only refer to his retirement as a touring drummer, but we’ll have to wait and see if he decides to focus on beanie collecting and writing travel books instead of 360 degree kits and monster fills.
