The Stoney Creek Sabres are ready to righteously smoke the competition.

Canadian beardo rock dudes Monster Truck are ready, willing and able to sponsor the shit out of your youth hockey team. Y’know, provided you go through the right application channels.

The Hamilton outfit says they received 12-15 applications when they held a contest to sponsor a squad and ended up providing the sponsorship assist to the Stoney Creek Sabres. We’re reasonably sure that they’re the only peewee girls house league hockey team sponsored by a rock band in Ontario, but we’d be more than happy to be proven wrong.

In an interview with Noisey, guitarist Jeremy Widerman explained why Monster Truck were more inclined to sponsor a girls team than a boys team.

“Before we even launched the campaign, we knew we were going to be leaning more towards a female team because we know that sometimes the girls hockey leagues can be overlooked by other sponsors,” said Widerman. “After we made our decision and after talking to the team’s organizers I learned that the girls teams don’t receive the same concessions when it comes to ice time and ice availability either. So at that point we knew we made the right decision.”

According to Widerman, the Sabres are thrilled to be associated with rockin’ rock music types even if it’s not quite clear if they’ve become Monster Truck fans.

“That was the other reason we are so glad to have chosen the Stoney Creek Sabres,” he said. “After speaking with the team’s organizers, we learned that the team was really excited about the prospect of having a rock band as the sponsor. I’m not sure to what extent they are all familiar with the music but I’m sure they are now.”

Speaking of hockey and Monster Truck connections, this seems like a good time to point out that the band’s track “Righteous Smoke” was adopted as the goal anthem of the Calgary Flames back in the ol’ timey days of 2013.
