Plus hear new music from Bruce Haack, Shooting Guns, Babysitter, and Surveillance.

No Rest for the Obsessed is a column spotlighting some of the most exciting new music AUX’s Associate Editor Jesse Locke finds each week. It began in 2010 for Calgary’s dearly departed alt-weekly FFWD, and takes its name from a Lightning Bolt song.

Mykki Blanco – “Coke White, Starlight”

Mykki Blanco delivered a riveting live-wire performance at last month’s Electric Eclectics festival and has now followed it up with one of the wildest hip-hop tracks in recent memory. “They don’t wanna see a man in a dress succeed” is a serious opening salvo, followed by references to Serena Williams, the Wu-Tang Clan, Susan Lucci (???) and some snackwavvy rhymes (“Mimosas in my sauna / Then I roll to Benihana”). The second half is even better, swerving into a grimy Mortal Kombat hallucination with pitched-down vocals slurring something about an opium den. This legit banger is the first cut from Blanco’s C-ORE compilation announcing the launch of his Dog Food Music Group label on September 18. Watch a twisted 10-minute video preview here.

Bruce Haack – “Party Machine”

Toronto’s Telephone Explosion are poppin’ up equally fresh with their latest reissue. The label’s second offering from illustrious children’s musician/electronic innovator Bruce Haack (born in tiny Nordegg, Alberta) is his spooked album Haackula, recorded in 1977 but woefully unreleased for decades. This edition comes complete with “Party Machine”, Haack’s perpetually jaw-dropping Russell Simmons collaboration from 1982. Its pulsating beats, Zapp-style vocoder, and shout out to Kurtis Blow place this anti-wack classic on the same level as Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock”, recorded the same year. Get your mitts on Haackula here.

Shooting Guns – “BarnBurner”

The last time I wrote about Saskatoon’s Shooting Guns, they shared the sexiest kijiji ad of all time. Now the hairy prairie riff-wielders have cranked out their own glorious noise with a new music video from WolfCop director Lowell Dean. The Juno-losing instrumental troupe provided the soundtrack to this B-horror bloodbath, and Dean returns the favour with a cinematic clip featuring Guns drummer Jim Ginther getting lit up around the campfire. This might be the most aptly title grasslands psych jam since 49th Parallel’s “Close the Barn Door.”

Babysitter feat. JLK – “Silky Cloud”

Speaking of scorch, Montreal-based/Victoria-born Babysitter are longtime faves of this scribe (Full disclosure: I once released a cassette for them). Since the hazy, crazy days of 2012, the scuzzball rockers have graduated to the vinyl big leagues, with their second long-player from Psychic Handshake out today. “Silky Cloud” is an anthem for the undermployed featuring vocals from Moss Lime axe wrangler Jane L. Kasowicz. Bizarre-o cover art from Marc Bell is the cherry on top of this flambéed sundae.

Surveillance – “Surveillance”

I’ll close out this week’s column with a head-shredding tune from Halifax’s Surveillance. The 16mm black and white hand processed video is the perfect accompaniment to this sonic barrage. RIYL: Eric’s Trip, Elevator, fuzzed out guitar madness, music in general.
