The owners have decided to focus on wine bars.

Today may be even darker than usual for Toronto’s goths with the news that popular Queen Street haunt The Velvet Underground will soon be closing its doors.

While anyone passing by would find themselves navigating a crowd of meticulously made-up, black-clad Bauhaus fans taking a breather from a new wave or goth dance party, the Velvet Underground will also be missed by those who regularly checked out the alternative, punk, and metal shows at the venue.

The corporation that owns the Velvet Underground, Liberty Entertainment Group, revealed that they would be increasing the focus on their portfolio of wine bars, which currently includes wildly popular spots such as Cibo and Ciao. Director of Marketing Stacey Hawkins offered the following statement: “We wish to thank all of the hard working team at the Velvet for their role in our success, as well as our valued patrons and the countless artists and musicians who have performed at this iconic Queen Street West venue.”
