Poor Lexi.

One year and a day after Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed the unarmed Michael Brown, hundreds of protestors returned to the scene of the crime.

According to on the ground reporting from The Guardian, this resulted in 22 arrests with police using pepper spray and batons on black men who were, once again, unarmed. Meanwhile, a group of white militiamen known as “Oath Keepers” were the ones strapped with rifles, body armour and camouflage.

However, the most infamous face in the crowd was a 19-year-old St. Louis University student named Lexi, taking the baffling stance of protecting the Ferguson officers. A photo of Lexi in her backwards cap, black-rimmed glasses, and Fall Out Boy t-shirt (with the immortal quote “I would rather get hit by something than let it hit them”) has sent the news reading world into a tizzy. Citing the old chestnut “Not all cops are bad”, she calls herself “like a figurehead almost” despite admitting her privileged position: “I know if I was pulled over, compared to a black man, I know I’m going to get off free.”

It should be no surprise that Lexi immediately became the source material of some merciless memes, showing her defending everyone from Bill Cosby and Jared Fogle to Voldemort’s army. While it’s easy to feel bad for her, it will also hopefully result in a bit of added perspective and empathy. Fall Out Boy singer Pete Wentz has made his opinion on the topic clear.
