Contestants sloshed through Mudhoney, splashed in Pearl Jam, and unlocked Alice in Chains.

In a move that presumably paves the way for a sophisti-pop challenge on Survivor and a nu rave themed episode of CSI: Cyber, long-running reality show Big Brother exploited some flannel-y Gen X nostalgia in the name of summer entertainment.

Yup, this was the week that Big Brother went grunge.

Contestants living inside network TV’s favourite hamster cage went toe-to-toe (but not in Doc Martens) for a challenge titled “Ready, Set, Grunge.” Does it involve having to endure boring stories about Tad? Nope! “Ready, Set, Grunge” featured competitors racing through a series of challenges that all had a punny connection to a grunge outfit.

In order to reach Nirvana, contestants had to crawl in Mudhoney, dig through a Soundgarden, splash around in Pearl Jam (which sounds like a pool full of semen but wasn’t) and engage in Smashing Pumpkins to achieve the ultimate goal of unlocking Alice in Chains. There was also a gag involving Screaming Trees that ranks as the highlight of the competition for its admirable silliness.

Sadly, there was no Temple of the Dog competition where these reality stars stacked Labradoodles into something resembling a chapel. Maybe next year.

Give the “Ready, Set, Grunge” competition a gander by hitting play on the rectangle below.

Just for good measure, here’s the greatest grunge TV parody of all time, courtesy of The Ben Stiller Show.
