Twenty-six-year-old Deborah Drever was elected to represent Alberta’s Calgary-Bow riding on May 5, but apparently in her younger days she also repped a darker master: the Calgary heavy metal scene. The newly minted NDP MLA is drawing fire for appearing on the cover for Calgary heavy metal band Gatekrashor’s 2012 cassette, Fear of Attack.

The album cover depicts Drever being threatened by a man with a bottle while the upstanding young lads in Gatekrashor appear none too concerned about it. Man, if you’re looking to score political points against someone, you can’t ask for a better opportunity than an image like this surfacing. On the other hand, what kind of self-respecting NDP member hasn’t appeared on the cassette-only album art of some underground band? What, nobody remembers Mulcair’s old rap project, Keystone XXL*?

“The photo I appeared in was in poor taste, and I apologize for its offensive content. It is not a photo I would appear in today,” Drever said in a statement circulated by NDP. “My priority is to represent the people of Calgary-Bow — a job I am proud to be elected for and excited to be doing.”

The heavy metal image isn’t the first time Drever has drawn criticism for images she’s appeared in. She came under fire for photos on her now-deleted Facebook page depicting her giving a peace sign next to a weed shirt (oh come on, a peace sign and weed shirt should be the NDP logo, if it isn’t already) and uh, someone giving the finger to the Canadian flag. Yikes. Remember how I said you couldn’t ask for a better opportunity than the Gatekrashor cover to score to some political points? Never mind.

(*may not be a real thing)
